Ha-tha literally means Sun and Moon, and it refers to the very essence of yoga which is to balance and unite the two major energy channels or nadis, ida and pingala. Traditional hatha yoga is a holistic yogic path, including disciplines, physical postures, known as asanas, pranayama (controlled breath), shatkriya (purification procedures) and meditation. It is intended to create a balance of strength and flexibility in the body as well as a balance of effort and surrender in each asana. It is a powerful tool for self transformation.
